Why you’re seeing ants now and why to call the ant exterminator

Warm, humid weather and food sources make South East QLD ideal for ant colonies. What you see on the bench are foragers - behind them is a nest that can number in the hundreds of thousands. Trail sprays scatter them; the right baiting strategy collapses the colony.

We treat homes and businesses across Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, Brisbane and surrounds every week—so we know the patterns, species, and entry points that matter in your area.

Types of Ant Infestations We Treat Across Brisbane, Ipswich & the Lockyer Valley

Brown ant treatment with liquid gel bait

Coastal Brown / Big-Headed Ants (Pheidole megacephala)

These are among the most common ants we find in Brisbane lawns, pavers, and driveways. They create loose sand mounds and invade kitchens or pet areas to feed on fats and oils. If you’ve noticed ants under pavers, tiny brown ants in the lawn, or ants trailing through the driveway after rain, it’s likely this species. We use granular protein baits and non-repellent perimeter sprays to eliminate the entire colony and stop them rebuilding.

Sugar ants are a broad group often active at night, invading cupboards, benchtops, and bathrooms searching for sweets and water. They’re frequently mistaken for black house ants, but sugar ants can also nest outdoors in tree roots, soil beds, and garden edges, making them one of the most persistent ant problems in Brisbane and Ipswich homes. We target both indoor trails and outdoor nest zones with baiting systems and non-repellent perimeter sprays, providing fast relief and long-term prevention.

Sugar Ants (Camponotus spp. & related species)

Green-Head (Metallic Pony) Ants (Rhytidoponera metallica)

These metallic green ants are common in gardens, lawns, and outdoor play areas across Ipswich and Brisbane. They rarely invade homes but can bite or sting painfully, especially when nests are disturbed during gardening or mowing. If you’re struggling with biting ants in the yard or green ants in garden beds, our targeted granular baiting and nest injection treatments eliminate them directly at the source.

black house ant treatment with liquid gel bait

Black House Ants (Ochetellus glaber)

These small, shiny ants are the ones you often see marching along kitchen benches, sinks, and bathroom tiles. They’re drawn to moisture and sweet foods, often appearing as tiny black ants in the kitchen or around sinks. Our technicians apply safe gel baits and barrier treatments that remove ant trails inside and prevent them returning through window frames or wall cavities.

Fire ants are an invasive and reportable pest in Queensland. They build mounded nests in lawns, soil or garden beds, and are aggressive when disturbed. If you notice reddish ants forming mounds or stinging ants in the yard, do not disturb them. Contact Biosecurity Queensland’s Fire Ant Eradication Program — we’ll assist with identification and guide you through correct reporting and control steps.

Fire Ants (Solenopsis invicta)

We also handle carpenter ants nesting in timber or roof voids, pharaoh ants found in apartments or hospitals, and garden ants building mounds along fences and retaining walls. Whether you’re dealing with ants in walls, ants in garden soil, or persistent ants in the bathroom, our treatments are customised to the species and environment for lasting results.

Prevention Tips That Actually Work

Wiping down a kitchen bench — regular cleaning helps prevent cockroaches and other pests in Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, and Brisbane homes.

✅ Store food in sealed containers to prevent ants from following scent trails to sugary or greasy items.

✅ Wipe up spills and crumbs promptly — even tiny traces can attract and sustain an entire colony.

✅ Fix leaking taps and moisture issues, as many ant species are drawn to damp areas for nesting or water sources.

✅ Empty bins daily and keep lids tightly closed to remove odours and food residues that can lure ants indoors.

✅ Seal cracks around windows, doors, and skirting boards to block common entry paths and nesting points.

✅ Trim back vegetation touching the house and remove debris where ants can build colonies close to walls or pavers.

✅ Schedule regular pest inspections, particularly in warmer months, to detect early ant activity and prevent infestations from spreading.

Why ants keep coming back

  • Colonies can have multiple queens and bud into new nests if disturbed by repellent ant treatments.

  • Spraying trails with the wrong product only moves the problem; correct product selection or bait carried back by workers is the reliable way to collapse the nest.

How our 4 step ant treatments work

1. Inspection & Identification
We begin by locating ant trails, nesting points, and entry paths inside and around your property. Identifying the species — such as black house ants, coastal brown ants, or green-headed ants — allows us to choose the most effective bait and treatment strategy for long-term control.

2. Custom Treatment Plan
Our licensed technicians design a targeted approach using professional-grade non-repellent sprays and specialised gel or granular baits. The plan is tailored to your property layout, infestation size, and whether the problem is indoors, outdoors, or both.

We use industry-approved products that are safe around children, pets, and sensitive environments when applied correctly. For commercial clients, we can attend after hours or during quiet periods to minimise disruption to operations.

4. Follow-Up & Prevention

  • General Pest Control

Our general pest control service includes a 3-month limited warranty.
External sprays remain effective for 3–6 months, while internal sprays offer protection for 6–12 months. Even after the initial treatment period, homeowners may continue to benefit for up to 12 months as new pest colonies take time to infest.

If covered pests return within the 3-month warranty period, we’ll return too. Please allow treatments adequate time to work — for example, up to 4 weeks for ants — and note that there are legal limits on how often insecticides can be applied within a 12-month period.

    Rodent Control

Our rodent control services target rats and mice using safe and effective baiting and exclusion methods. Treatment effectiveness depends on property conditions and hygiene practices.
Follow-up visits may be required for full control, especially in severe infestations. While no warranty applies, our technicians provide tailored prevention advice to help stop rodents from returning and regular baiting programs where required.

    End-of-Lease Pest Control

This service covers fleas and/or cockroaches, depending on your lease requirements.
Properties must be vacant, clean, and pet-free before treatment. German cockroaches, flea eggs, and flea pupae are excluded, and no warranty applies.

Time slots for end-of-lease treatments are limited each week and are subject to availability. Priority is given to our ongoing customers, so we recommend booking early to secure your preferred time.

    Visual Termite Inspection

Our visual termite inspections are conducted in accordance with AS 3660.2:2017.
Please note these are not timber pest inspections (AS 4349.3), pre-purchase inspections, or invasive inspections. No warranty applies.

    Treatment Performance

All our liquid insecticides are APVMA-approved and designed for delayed toxicity, making them safe for use around homes when applied by licensed technicians.
Some are non-repellent, meaning crawling and flying insects cannot detect them — pests may enter over the treated area and a delayed effect may occur, allowing the active ingredients to transfer from one pest to another.

A temporary increase in pest activity after treatment is normal due to the flushing effect of some repellent products and effect of the insecticide on the insects causing them to behave abnormally. Treatments do not repel typical household pests; instead, they work by killing pests once they contact treated surfaces.
The time it takes for insects to die varies between species and size — usually ranging from a few hours to several days.

Common Questions About Professional Ant Pest Control Across Ipswich, Brisbane & the Lockyer Valley

  • After our licensed pest control technicians apply a professional ant treatment, you’ll usually see a noticeable drop in visible trails within a few days—especially in kitchens, bathrooms and around external pavers. Because many species (e.g. coastal brown/big-headed ants) form multi-queen, multi-nest colonies, full colony collapse can take 1–2 weeks or more depending on the size, age and number of satellite nests. Our inspection and follow-up process (where recommended) ensures nests are targeted and long-term results achieved for reliable ant control in Brisbane, Ipswich and the Lockyer Valley.

  • Yes. We use Australian-approved, professional ant baits (gel and granular) and carefully applied non-repellent treatments designed for residential homes and commercial food premises. Applications are placed in crack-and-crevice areas, bait stations and strategic external zones to protect people, pets and food-prep areas. While DIY aerosols only kill foragers you can see, our targeted, pet-safe ant treatment is delivered by fully licensed technicians to maximise safety and effectiveness—ideal for homes as well as commercial ant control (HACCP-aligned) across South-East Queensland.

  • Even “a few ants” can indicate a larger colony trailing from wall voids, under kickboards, through expansion joints or along garden edging and pavers. Warning signs include: persistent indoor trails to sweets/grease, soil mounds along driveway/paver joints, ants emerging from power points or appliances, repeated incursions after rain, or stings from larger outdoor species. In Brisbane’s warm, humid climate, ongoing activity or trails reappearing after DIY sprays usually means it’s time for professional ant removal.

  • Our General Pest Control package includes full coverage for nuisance ants alongside other common pests. For ants specifically, we identify the species and food preference, then treat nesting sites, foraging trails and likely entry points using professional baits and non-repellent barriers, plus practical advice on sealing and hygiene. Whether it’s a home kitchen, a café storeroom or an office break area, our service covers both residential ant control and commercial ant management across Ipswich, Brisbane and the Lockyer Valley. Heavier or complex infestations (e.g., coastal brown ant treatment under pavers and lawns) may require follow-up visits—your technician will advise upfront, often at a reduced return rate.

  • Before your treatment: wipe benches, store food (including pet food) in sealed containers, empty bins, and clear access to skirtings, kickboards and external paver edges. After treatment: avoid spraying over or wiping away bait placements, clean routine food residues promptly, fix leaking taps and moisture issues, seal gaps around doors/pipes and trim vegetation touching the house. Good hygiene and exclusion practices—combined with professional ant treatment—are the key to preventing future ant problems in kitchens and outdoor entertainment areas.

  • Professional treatments break the colony cycle and provide lasting control, but no service can promise “never again” if attractive conditions (food, water, access) remain. That’s why we pair targeted treatment with prevention—monitoring hotspots, advising on sealing and sanitation, and scheduling maintenance at sensible intervals. This integrated approach delivers the most durable results for long-term ant control Brisbane-wide.

  • Costs vary by property size, infestation complexity and whether the site is residential or commercial. Most homes can view current pricing, choose their property type and book directly online at eastwestpest.com.au/store. For larger homes, warehouses, strata or multi-site businesses, we’ll provide a detailed quote after inspection so you know exactly what’s included—no surprises.

  • The species we treat most often are black house ants (small, shiny black ants common in kitchens and bathrooms) and coastal brown/big-headed ants (an invasive species that nests under pavers, lawns and garden edges). Outdoors, green-headed/bull ants can sting and require cautious, targeted control around play areas and work sites. Correct identification helps us choose the right bait and strategy for fast, effective results. Fire ants are also on the rise requiring fast response times to prevent painful stings and even hospitalisation.

  • You can, but avoid using aerosols or repellent sprays over our bait placements or in treated zones, as this can disrupt trails and contaminate baits. If you’d like to add supplementary methods—sticky monitors, better food storage, sealing gaps, trimming vegetation—we’ll advise how to do this without reducing the effectiveness of your professional ant treatment.

  • For most homes in Ipswich, Brisbane and the Lockyer Valley, preventative general pest control every 6–12 months works well. Food-handling premises (cafés, restaurants, childcare) may need servicing every 1, 3 or 6 months to remain compliant and to suppress seasonal spikes—especially after rain and during warmer months. Ask us about tailored maintenance plans for better value per visit and stronger, year-round protection.

If you’re booking a pest treatment for the first time, you may have questions about safety, timing and what to expect. Below you’ll find our most common questions — written for homeowners and businesses across South-East Queensland.
